Master of Fine Arts in Theatre-Acting

The Master of Fine Arts in Theatre-Acting with a focus on the creation of new works at The Ohio State University prepares actors in the fundamentals of acting, with experience in classical and contemporary styles within the context of developing methods for creating original contemporary work. The program emphasizes the development of actors who can work in a repertory company setting as well as function as an independent artist producing original work. The program prepares actors to work in creative ways with local communities in realizing original works.

The Theatre Graduate Program recruits a single class of graduate acting students every three years. The next class will be accepted in autumn 2025.

Tom Dugdale: Directing; Devising; Acting

Mandy Fox: Voice Acting; New Works Creation; Voice and Dialect Coaching

Kevin McClatchy: Acting (Stage, Television, and Film); Directing

Dr. Claudia Rene Wier: Performance and Theatre Studies; Opera Studies; Applied Youth Theatre

The MFA program has close ties to the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD), a collaborative think-space, distinguished by a transdisciplinary approach to research and teaching, functioning as an applied collaboratory for time-based digital media production. ACCAD features specialized and flexible studios for animation, motion capture, interactive design, media production, and mediated performance design.

In addition, the Department of Theatre, Film, and Media Arts is affiliated with the Wexner Center for the Arts, a contemporary arts center and educational program at Ohio State, with a wide range of local, national, and international presentations in the visual and performance arts, film, video, and architecture.

The MFA applicant must meet the requirements for admission to the Graduate School of The Ohio State University, possess an undergraduate degree in theatre or related fields, show interest in new works creation, and demonstrate a potential for excellence in performance through an audition and interview.

The Theatre Graduate Handbook contains the policies and procedures that govern graduate admissions, degree requirements, advising, the determination of satisfactory academic progress, the selection and evaluation of teaching associates, grievance procedures, and academic standards.

The MFA-Acting Advising Sheet contains the required coursework and other degree requirements, curricular timetable, and typical course offering patterns.
