The Lab Series is a student-driven, department-nurtured performance research laboratory housed in the New Works Lab of the Drake Performance and Events Center. The Lab Series, which supports 18 or more projects per academic year, provides students with a hands-on laboratory space that supports the creation of innovative work on a limited budget. The pieces presented are a mix of new plays and devisings in various stages of development, full stagings of published plays, and community-building events. Students gain experience as writers, directors, actors, designers, technicians, and managers; emphasis is on creative risk and learning through doing. Each production has a two-night run on Mondays and Tuesdays at 7 PM, and seating is first-come, first-served with tickets available at 6 PM. The audience configuration in the New Works Lab is flexible, but the maximum capacity is 50 seats.
You can read more about the current Lab Series season (and view an archive of its productions).
The Lab Series was founded in 2011 by Associate Professor Jennifer Schlueter, who continues to coordinate and facilitate the project. She works with a team of undergraduate Production Managers and Technical Coordinators to undertake its day-to-day business.
Submissions are accepted one semester in advance of the intended semester of production. Any Ohio State undergraduate or graduate student may apply. View our guidelines and submit an application here: Lab Series Guidelines | Lab Series Application
