Leah and the Dybbuk: A Yiddish Ghost Story
Written and Directed by John Michael Sefel (PhD Student)

Part Romeo and Juliet, part FaustLeah and the Dybbuk is a new English-language work based on S. Ansky's Yiddish theatre classic, The Dybbuk, or Between Two Worlds. This production features a cast and prodution team made up of Ohio State undergraduate and graduate students, faculty members, and members of the wider Columbus community. The play tells the story of a young woman being forced to marry against her will, and of her supernatural bond to a dead Yeshiva student. The production investigates tradition, faith, and folklore, both honoring and querying Ansky's original play and his famous ethnographic expedition on which it was based.

This work builds on Sefel's work in the Department of Theatre, the Yiddish and Ashkenazic Studies Program, and the Lawrence and Lee Theatre Research Institute, as well as his Ohio State-supported research at the Vilnius Yiddish Studies Institute in Lithuania, and the National Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, Massachussetts.

Co-sponsored by Ohio State's Melton Center for Jewish Studies.
