The Ohio State University Department of Theatre

The director provided us with a series of evocative phrases, ideas and images for the visual team to begin its journey of research, analysis, and conceptualization. As lighting designer I returned again and again to the notion of anxious and unsettling dreams as a component of a sleep deprived mode.

Bowen Theatre was reconfigured from a typical full thrust into a stage space along a diagonal axis. The seating set-up was galley style, with two audience sections, split by a long, narrow acting zone.

Lighting was concentrated on the scenic platforms at each end of the diagonal axis. Other unique locations included: recessed fixtures in the ramp, among and around the five projection screens dispersed throughout the space, on the floor behind the seating areas, moving lights rigged beneath the tension grid.
