Pangea explores science, religion, extreme rendition and pornography on three continents - Antarctica, Asia, and North America - in non-linear, overlapping scenes involving actors, live video as well as pre-recorded sequences and stills. This new work received its premiere at Ohio State, with playwright Stephen Culp in residence through the rehearsal and production process.
Lighting this production in the round involved a number of unique challenges. The first scene takes place in a research station I chose to illuminate with fluorescent pendant fixtures, until a catastrophic power failure occurs. The second scene unfolds simultaneously in a detention room and a seedy club, outfitted with low-tech flashing up lights. The final scene reveals a teenage boy's bedroom, where he speaks to his mom "live" at her big box store, and later performs an online event for male clients. Four large irregular projection screens provided atmospheric and texture support for the varied environments.
