Orpheus Descending is Tennessee Williams’ poignant exploration of love and danger in the human condition. The director pointed out that “Orpheus Descending is intensely rich in imagery, myth, and ritual drawn from the American south and from Greek mythology.” Supporting the world of the play and the director’s concept, the lighting design aimed to create three different spaces within the same set which signify three layers of spatial meaning: the mundane world of a small Southern town; the brutal reality this world signifies; and the realities beyond, to which the characters try to escape.
