Godspell by John-Michael Tebelak with music and new lyrics by Stephen Schwartz explores the formation of a tribe through the teachings of Jesus. The musical transforms the audience and the performers through numerous parables, the passion story and a collection of rock-and-roll musical numbers. The lighting design incorporated moving light technology in a variety of ways to complement the musical moments as well as sculpt the dramatic and emotional shifts in the show. The color mixing capabilities of the Vari-lites combined with the scrollers provided numerous color options from various lighting angles and locations. This color variety allowed me to enhance the myriad of dramatic stories within the musical as well as provide vibrant colors to the musical numbers. The design also incorporated two choreographed flying battens that contained an array of moving lights. These battens would fly in during rock-and-roll musical numbers to add scenic variety and energy to the stage. In the end, the lighting and the well timed batten movements created a dynamic and exciting stage picture.
