Allan Munro is a born and bred South African. He received his Bachelors degree, his teaching diploma and a (South African) Honours degree from the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, and his Masters (on Athol Fugard and My Children! My Africa!) and PhD (on Ambiguity and Deception in South African Resistance Theatre: 1976 -1996) from The Ohio State University, under the guidance of Professors Constantinidis, Woods and Lupenga Mpande. He has taught in Drama Departments (at the Potchefstroom Universty for Christian Higher Education – now North West University) and in the English Department of the same University. He chaired the Department of Drama at the Pretoria University, before taking up his current post as the Research Professor (Research Fellow) servicing the research interests and needs of the entire Faculty (School) of the Arts at the Tshwane University of Technology.
Allan is a man of the theatre. His start in theatre was in acting and in lighting design. His portfolio also includes directing numerous plays (in University settings), he has written 10 plays and a number of screenplays and documentaries. He has presented papers at national (South African) and international conferences on theatre philosophy, theatre teaching and theatre research. He has supervised a number of Masters and Doctorates. He has won a number of teaching awards (including a Graduate Teaching Award at OSU in 1992), has presented a number of workshops on writing and on theatre for development, and has run a number of research projects on using theatre as intervention strategy. He is currently completing a book on playwriting, and another as an Introduction to Research in the Arts. His current research interests are on Metaphorisation in Criticism in the Arts. Allan was also a very good Rugby referee!
Allan is married to Marth, who has a doctorate in Voice for performance, is a dedicated Lessac qualified teacher, has a CMA and serves as Associate Editor of the Voice and Speech Review. He has a son who plays the piano and the violin, and made the State swimming team!
