The Cone of Uncertainty:
New Orleans after Katrina
with Guest Artist Jose Torres Tama
September 29-30 at 7:30pm
Roy Bowen Theatre
Since 1995, Jose Torres Tama has been touring across the country with solo shows that thrive on a fusion of spoken word prose, bilingual poetry, rituals of fire, symbolic movement, and exaggerated personae, creating spectacles that are visually dynamic and politically charged. Add to this cauldron a heady dose of hilariously absurd observations on consumer culture and you have a unique vision coming from a New Jersey/ New York bred Ecuadorian-born brujo performance artist based in New Orleans.
Tama managed to escape from Hurricane Katrina on a pirated school bus operating a rescue mission of Creole families. As a result of this experience, he created and developed The Cone of Uncertainty: New Orleans after Katrina. In addition to these two performances, Tam will also hold a public lecture for the campus called “Art as a Tool for Social Change” and will conduct a master class for our graduate students called “Exploring the Personal to Comment on the Political in Performance Art.” Tama’s visit is being funded through The Department of Theatre Guest Artist Fund.
