An original movement theatre performance, The Fire Still Burns is a memoir of the Lower East Side of New York City, telling stories of immigrant women in the early 20th Century. It examines issues of language, culture, clothing and work relating to young women's struggles to establish an American identity. Historic events including the 1909 Shirtwaist Strike and 1911 Triangle Factory Fire set the stage for memories of extraordinary women, including union leaders Pauline Newman and Rose Schneiderman. A collage of spoken word, movement and video images, The Fire Still Burns explores the fluid nature of time and memory.
