An influential founder of the off-off-Broadway movement, Maria Irene Fornes is known as one of the "mothers" of the American avant-garde. Born in Havana, Cuba, Fornes emigrated with her mother to the U.S. in 1945. She melds American realism with an often discontinuous narrative and fragmented characterization. In The Conduct of Life, she addresses political issues facing the Latin community in the Americas: the personal and political costs of dictatorship, class division, and conflicting attitudes toward sexuality and sexual violence. The play tells the story of Orlando, a government-sanctioned torturer; his wife, Leticia; and Nena, a young girl Orlando has abducted.
